There was a large chamber at the back of Redfordâs, in the most private part of the house. The members who gathered there were able to beâ¦freer with one another. Clothes were loosened, sometimes discarded altogether, and those who liked to be watched could put a display on for their neighbours, if they wished. Murdo preferred to enjoy his sexual encounters in private, but, like many members, he usually began a visit to Redfordâs by seeking out a willing partner.
He followed Sinclair through the dimly lit, twisting corridors that led from the clubroom to the back chamber. This was the part of Redfordâs that Kit didnât bother spending money on. The corridor walls were simple plaster, the floors bare stone, and the irregular wall sconces gave off only just enough flickering light for them to make out their way.
Soon they were approaching the door. From behind it came the unmistakable buzz of a crowd, and sure enough, when they entered, it was to find that the chamber was already thronged with men in various states of dress and undress. Some lounged in chairs, others leaned against walls. Still others kneeled or sat on the floor. Some were busy with their partners, kissing, fondling, and cocksucking, while others were turned towards the middle of the room, seeming to be watching something that was going on there.
From their position near the door, Murdo and Sinclair couldnât see what that was, though they could hear grunts and moans and the slapping sound of flesh on flesh. Sinclair raised a questioning eyebrow at Murdo and jerked his head at the other side of the room. When Murdo nodded, he began to skirt his way round the edge of the crowd, and Murdo followed.
Theyâd scarcely gone ten yards when a young man stepped into their path. He was tall and slender with fair hair and an impossibly pretty face, and he didnât even seem to see Murdoâhis wide grey gaze was all for Sinclair.
âIain,â he said. âPleaseâI have to talk to youââ
âJames? What the hell?â Sinclair spoke in an undertone but there was a quiet fury in his voice. âYou shouldnât be here!â
The boyâhe couldnât be much more than twenty, surely?ârallied a little at that.
âIâm a member just like you,â he replied defiantly. âMr. Redford let me join.â
âWell, he shouldnât have!â Sinclair snapped. âIâdâve blackballed you if Iâd known!â
By now, Murdo had drawn level with Sinclair, and he turned to look at his friend, surprised by this rare loss of composure. Sinclair was always so coolly amused, so blasé, but nowâwell, his usually smooth and glossy feathers were all ruffled now.
How very amusing.
âKit doesnât allow blackballing,â Murdo put in, his tone very mild. He had to suppress a grin when Sinclair turned on him, eyes flashing with temper.
âYes, but he needs references!â
Murdo watched as comprehension dawned on Sinclairâs handsome face and he whirled back to James to snarl, âWho the fuck gave you a reference?â
For a moment, the two men just stared at one anotherâMurdo might as well not have been there.
